About Us
Nestled in the hills of Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, Mama Goose Homestead is a small batch sourdough micro bakery and farmstand rooted in tradition, community, and the art of slow food.

Founded by mother and Sourdough Artisan, Rachel Nance, Mama Goose Homestead began as a way to share real, handmade food with heart. When she’s not crafting artisan loaves in her kitchen, Rachel embraces a beautifully unconventional lifestyle…practicing jiu-jitsu and strength training as forms of resilience and ritual, wandering the forest in search of wild medicinal plants and edible treasures, and tending to the ever-changing rhythm of homestead life. She shares this way of living with her children, teaching them to honor the natural world, move with the seasons, and grow strong in both body and character through connection, discipline, and curiosity.

The name Mama Goose is more than a nod to motherhood, it’s a tribute to protection, tradition, and a touch of old world magic. Like a mama goose guarding her nest, Rachel cares deeply for the things she raises and creates, whether it’s her children, her chickens, or her sourdough.

A dear friend, Clay Webster, has stepped in to help carry the vision forward, lending both skill and heart to the daily rhythm of baking, growing, and creating. His dedication and friendship have become an essential part of what makes Mama Goose Homestead thrive.

Mama Goose Homestead is also inspired by the legend of Mother Goose, the folkloric matron who passed down songs and stories across generations. Much like those timeless tales, the sourdough starter used in every loaf has been lovingly handed down for over 300 years, naturally leavened, hand fed, and slow fermented for deep flavor and easier digestion.

Beyond sourdough, Mama Goose Homestead offers wildcrafted jellies, farm fresh and foraged goods, honey, herbal creations, and vintage finds, each product a reflection of a life lived slowly, deeply, and with intention.

At Mama Goose Homestead, we believe every loaf tells a story, and we’re honored to share it with you.
Practices
Long Fermentation: Every sourdough loaf is slow-fermented for 12–24 hours using our heirloom starter. This process develops natural flavor, improves digestibility, and enhances nutrient availability.
Simple, Honest Ingredients: We bake with King Arthur flour, sea salt, filtered water, and real ingredients — no preservatives, no commercial yeast, no shortcuts.
Sustainable Living: Our baking practices are energy-conscious, and we believe in reducing waste by making use of every bit of what our land provides.
Community Driven: From the Wellsboro Growers Market to our farmstand and local partnerships, we’re proud to be part of a growing network of small farms working together to bring real food to local families.
